WISE honors Noemi Mirkin on becoming an American Physical Society (APS) FellowThe WISE Program held a lunch in honor of UM Physics faculty member Noemi Mirkin. In addition to her research and teaching, Noemi is the faculty advisor for the UM Student Chapter of the Association for Women in Science and is a longtime friend of the WISE Program. Mirkin was elected to this honor by her professional peers, "for her leadership in establishing productive international collaborations, her many achievements in biological molecular physics and for her long service to the international community as an officer and Executive Committee member of the Forum on International Physics." Mirkin was a receipient of the 2002 Sarah Goddard Power Award. The Power awards are for faculty members who have distinguished themselves through their leadership, scholarship and sustained service on behalf of women. She also received the The Distinguished Alumni Service Award, the highest honor the Alumni Association can bestow upon an alumna/us on behalf of the University. In addition, Mirkin has been active in minority recruitment, the Hispanic Alumni Council and the Sigma Xi Council. Her work with women in science extends beyond the campus as she has been president of the Detroit Chapter of the Association of Women in Science and served multiple roles in that organization locally and nationally. She also has been on the executive committee of the Forum on International Physics of the American Physical Society and the Michigan Latino Task Force for the Advancement of Minorities in the Sciences. As a supporter of women, she has worked at the local level and in schools to improve educational opportunities for women and Hispanics. |
