WISE Director Davis helps nominate winning student for UM Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) award

David Lorch, a Ph.D. candidate in biomedical engineering and WISE Program instructor extraordinaire, has received a Rackham Outstanding GSI Award at an April 17th ceremony. Nominated by WISE Director, Dr. Cinda-Sue Davis, he was the only College of Engineering graduate student to receive the award this year.

David has worked for several years in WISE K-12 outreach activities. He has served as a coach for the WISE Lego Robotics teams and has taught several robotics sections in the WISE Girls into Science and Engineering (WISE-GISE) summer programs. Last summer he served as a GSI in a new course integrating science, engineering and math developed by Dr. Guy Meadows for the M-STEM academy. He has also served as a GSI for many CoE courses over the years, most recently Engin 101. His enthusiasm, patience, sense of humor, knowledge, and work ethic have made it joy to work with him. It is fair to say that we could have never reached as many students, from middle school through high school, without David being on our team.

David will be working with us again this summer and then he will defend his PhD dissertation in the fall. Congratulations David! This recognition is well deserved.
