WISE co-sponsors 2nd annual math and science concentration event

The WISE program co-sponsored the 2nd annual Finding a Concentration for Math and Science majors event, held this year at Cottage Inn. The event, part of the College of Literature Science and the Arts' Concentration Week, is aimed at providing undecided students with information about various math and science concentrations from a student perspective.

In addition to a pizza and salad buffet, the more than 90 undergraduate student participants were able to talk with declared concentrators from over 20 math and science concentrations. The declared students were kept busy answering questions for the entire two-hour session.

Students interested in a biology concentration were able to find out about the nuances between majors in biology, cellular and molecular biology (CMB), ecology and evolutionary biology (EEB) and biophysics. Students also learned about new concentrations, including the new public health undergraduate concentration that has a fifth-year masters option, as well as little known concentrations such as informatics.

Electronic handouts about declaration requirements, how to choose a concentration and how to declare were provided to participants prior to the event.

The student participants seemed pleased with the event. Many thanked organizers before leaving, and one student was overheard saying, "I'm so glad I came to this!" as she headed out the door.

Additional sponsors of the event included the Science Learning Center, LSA Academic Advising, the Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP) and several LSA departments.
