WISE co-sponsors 2nd annual math and science concentration eventThe Movement of Underrepresented Sisters in Engineering and the Sciences (MUSES) hosted the MUSES Achievement Gala on Friday, April 9. The event highlighted a year that featured a range of successful social events and professional development activities. Graduate and undergraduate women from a wide range of majors were honored for their academic achievement and accomplishments. Among the scholars honored were Jamie Perryman, who published two journal papers; Clinique Brundige, who received the Martin Luther King Jr. Spirit Award, College of Engineering Distinguished Leadership Award and first place in the Engineering Graduate Symposium Award; and Tahira Reid, who received the College of Engineering Distinguished Leadership Award. Also honored was Imade Asemota, who was selected as a GEM PhD Fellow. Joy Oguntebi was inducted into the Inaugural class of the University of Michigan Edward Bouchet Graduate Honor Society. Undergraduate Jerece White was named Mentee of the Year. Others were honored for their participation in the Active U Team led by team captain Cheryl Jacobs. Special guests at the dinner included Derrick Scott, Director of the UM College of Engineering Multicultural Services Office and Dr. Kenya Ayers, Executive Director of Esperanza Communications. The keynote speech was delivered by Dr. Bellandra B. Foster, president and principal engineer of BBF Engineering Services, PC (BBF). Dr. Foster shared her strategies for achieving balance as an engineer, entrepreneur, wife and mother. Attendees were given copies of her book, For Love and Money: Seven Guidelines for Achieving Success in Your Home and Business. In it she offers seven principles, including identifying your passion and purpose, being resourceful and finding your vision, and playing for the home team. Her presentation cited her academic preparation, spiritual conviction, thoughtful reflection and proactive style as key to her professional success. The MUSES Executive Board will be passing on its responsibilities to a new group of officers for 2009-2010 in May.
