MUSES Receives College of Engineering AwardThe WISE-sponsored graduate student organization, Movement of Underrepresented Sisters in Engineering and the Sciences (MUSES) received the College of Engineering Elaine Harden Award that recognizes the Michigan Engineering student society that best exemplifies its ideals of leadership and service at a brunch and ceremony on Sunday, March 18. Past President Joy Oguntebi, Secretary Catherine Espaillat and President Angela Dixon joined MUSES Advisor Debbie Taylor at the event. The award honors the organization’s members as well as its additional officers including Vice-President Kyla McMullen and Li’l MUSES Coordinator Angelique Johnson. Each semester MUSES hosts a series of professional development panels and workshops and social programs. Recent events have included an Industry Panel and a session entitled “Addressing the Issues of Professional Women.” More relaxing and enriching activities included ice-skating, a stress and relaxation workshop and weekly ballroom dancing instruction. Instead of relying on the executive committee to coordinate all the activities, various MUSES members plan and host events. Since its inception in 1999, MUSES has served the campus community and the broader Michigan community by volunteering for Introduce A Girl to Engineering Day, the Sally Ride Science Festival, ToyChallenge, Southeastern Michigan Science Fair, IBM Summer Program. MUSES members have represented the university at various events including the Women of Color in Technology Conference, made presentations at the Women Engineering Program Advocates Network (WEPAN) and at campus orientations event. In June MUSES representatives will make a presentation about the organization at the American Association for Engineering Education annual conference.
