SWIP sends delegates to undergrad physics conferenceIn January, WISE sponsored a group from the Society of Women in Physics (SWIP) to attend the 2nd Annual Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics at the University of Southern California. Seniors Kate Green (physics) and Kristina Nyland (physics and astronomy), juniors Paige Warmker (physics and math), Katie Crimmins (physics and music), Kaitlin Moore (physics) and Meagan Carr (physics), freshman Becky Jackson (physics), and SWIP faculty advisor Professor Jennifer Ogilvie attended the conference as one of two seed groups, the second of which was from Yale. The seed groups were funded by the conference organizers to attend this year’s event in preparation for organizing similar conferences for their home regions. With the support of WISE and the physics department itself, SWIP will host the 1st annual Midwestern Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics next year. This year’s conference included research talks by, among others, Professor Frances Hellman (UC Berkeley, “Spin Electronics: Magnets and Semiconductors”), Professor Gail Hanson (UC Riverside, “Experiences in Particle Physics”), and Professor Ogilvie (“Watching Biology in Action with a Femtosecond Camera”). Professor Beverly Hartline of Delaware State University gave two talks on issues concerning women in physics, and there were discussion panels on careers outside of academia and on the “ins and outs” of graduate school. The conference also included student research talks and a poster session, in which Green and Nyland presented posters on research done at U-M. Next year’s conference at U-M will likely include research talks, student research presentations, and lab tours, and will aim to include high school students in some capacity.
