Resume writing workshop for undergraduates in science and engineering majors
The month of December started off with a WISE-sponsored resume-writing workshop put on by the Career Center. This 90-minute workshop included reviewing and critiquing dozens of resumes and cover letters, considering alternative ways to present the same information and brainstorming possible experiences to include on a resume, including class projects and research.

WISE co-sponsors conference for Physics undergrads
The First Midwest Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physic was held January 19-20 in UM's West Hall. The conference, geared toward women anticipating graduation, provided info about applying to grad school and career opportunities, and gave attendees a chance to hear about the latest research in physics, presented by their peers. Science Fair outreach
In a science lab at Scarlett Middle School in Ann Arbor in January, University of Michigan students helped middle school students with their science fair projects. The room was filled with students in safety goggles and aprons. There were beakers on hot plates whose contents were bubbling. There were excited exclamations and questions being asked. Outside in the parking lot a pair of students launched rockets. In the media center seeds were being sown and calculations where being made. Click

WISE Residence Program: getting involved with the Society of Women Engineers by Sarah Ilkhani-Pour
The beginning of this school year, I passed a group of SWE women in the hall. They called me over: "Sarah, we were just talking about you." Apparently, they heard that SEE camp had gone well, and they had a new officer position opening. They asked if I was interested, and within a few days, I was named Regional Bid Co-Chair. National Science Foundation-sponsored Research Experiences For Undergraduates (REUs) are national and international experiences hands-on, paid lab experiences for
Undergraduate students. These experiences are typically 8 weeks long, include travel expenses and housing, and pay $4,000. Click here for full story.

WISE sponsors second First Lego League Team
The WISE program continued to sponsor the M Go Blue Bots all-girl First Lego League team and for the first time, sponsored a second all-girl team, M Go Blue Bots II.
The teams consist of girls in grades 5-9 with the maximum of 10 on each team. Weekly Sunday afternoon practices at Ums Undergraduate Science Building are led by UM graduate and undergraduate engineering student coaches. The girls learn to build and program Lego Mindstorm robots to complete missions on a board. They are are responsible for researching and presenting a project based on the current year's FLL challenge. The teams them compete against other teams at huge FLL events in the area.

WISE summer camps
The WISE program is offering four summer camps in 2008: The Girls in Science and Engineering (GISE) Program for students finishing grades 7 and 8 in June 2008; The Grace Hopper Project a computer science camp for students finishing grades 9-11; the IBM STEM Camp for Deaf and Hard of Hearing High School Students; and the new RobotC for Girls programming camp for students finishing grades 8 - 12.
