WISE sponsors Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day: The Green Dollhouse Project

Students from several area schools participated in the Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day project on Saturday, January 24 on North Campus. Although the official Introduce A Girl to Engineering Day is officially scheduled for February 19 as part of National Engineer's Week, the Engineering Office offered the event to avoid conflicts with the U of M winter break.

The project gave students a chance to learn about sustainable design and apply their knowledge immediately to creative work. After a viewing a power point presentation given by engineering student and WISE student staff member Zakiyah Sayyed, participants designed and built "green" dollhouses. The structures ranged from homes for small families to a musical theater. Graduate students, including Faheemah Mustafaa, Nicole Campbell, Nancy Douyon and, along with Huron High School counselor, RaShonda Jamerson assisted students as they cut, glued, taped and wove materials from local fabric stores and recycled materials from the Scrap Box.

During lunch, the graduate students were joined by Line van Nieuwstadt and shared information about various engineering majors. Each participant received a certificate of participation, and special awards were presented for creativity and sustainability.
