WISE presents information on resources for science students

On a cold evening in January, representatives from the WISE Program, the Science Learning Center (SLC) and the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provided a brief information session about their resources to an audience of about 20 science and engineering students.

The session was provided as a way to reach students who may not know about the resources provided by these three programs.

Jamie Saville, Director of the WISE Science Office, began the session with a description of monthly academic support and career workshops as well as community building activities for women in science and engineering. She also encouraged students to join the WISE undergraduate advisory board and described pre-college outreach employment opportunities.

UROP's John Vasquez described his organization's research opportunities for undergraduate students. He encouraged students who missed out on a UROP experience during freshman year to participate as sophomores, juniors and seniors. John described the UROP application process, and what he looks for in an application. He also pointed out that UROP offers research opportunities in all fields - biomedical, social science, humanities, natural sciences, etc. These experiences are great stepping stones to other summer research opportunities and to graduate school.

Joe Salvatore from the SLC described that program's two study centers (a main location in the Chemistry Building and a satellite location in the USB) as well as programs and services offered at these sites. He described how to join SLC Study Group or become an SLC Study Group Leader, how to register for Science Success Series workshops on exam preparation, science careers, and applying to medical school, and how to access GSI office hours, and course materials on reserve.

The session was sponsored by the WISE, SLC, and UROP.
