WISE Celebrates 25 Years!

This spring, WISE celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary with a day-long program for friends and alumnae entitled: “Celebrating Success and Cultivating Successors”. The event was held Friday, May 12 in the Lurie Engineering Center. The program kicked off with a welcome to attendees from Marvin Parnes, Associate Vice President for Research and Executive Director of Research Administration for the Office of Vice President for Research. Following, Dr. Cinda-Sue Davis, our director, presented data on the state of women in science and engineering--  internationally, nationally and here at UM. Attendees took tours of new north campus developments  including the new Computer Science Building, the Duderstadt Center , the Wave Field and the Wind Tunnel. The attendees were also invited to share their experiences as women in science, engineering, and medicine fields for WISE’s Oral History Project.

During Lunch, the ADVANCE Program’s STRIDE Committee gave a presentation on biases in hiring found within and outside the university environment. The women then moved on to discussion sessions where they were given a chance to share their experiences, insights, and ideas as women in the field. WISE’s goal is to use the knowledge gleaned in these sessions to improve our programming.

In the evening, the women attended an interactive theater performance by the CRLT Players called “Gender and Pedagogy”. Attendees were able to see and participate in the original WISE physics class sketch which demonstrates biases that take place in the classroom and asks the audience to identify and suggest corrections to the situation.
