A message from Director Dr. Cinda-Sue Davis
The start of the 2006-2007 academic year brings exciting news from the Women in Science and Engineering Program. The Science Office, previously located in the Frieze Building, has moved into a wonderful new location in 1712 Chemistry Building. The space, generously remodeled by LS&A, provides not only office space for the Science staff, but also a large open workspace perfect for visiting groups of middle school girls as well as noon workshops for undergraduate and graduate women. We love being so much closer to the students we serve as well as feeling that we are right in the middle of the action! Click here for full story.

WISE Welcomes First Year Graduate Women
The 3rd annual Welcome Dinner for Graduate women in the Sciences and Mathematics was held in September. More than 60 women attended. The featured speaker was Pamela Raymond, Professor of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology. Raymond spoke about the underrepresentation of women in the STEM fields. She pointed out that when she was doing her graduate work at UM, there was only 1 female full professor in the Biology department. Thirty years later, despite years of overrepresentation of women undergraduates in biology, she is now the only female full professor in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology. WISE Summer Programs: Three Months of Activities
In June the WISE program hosted 111 middle school girls for the week-long Girls in Science and Engineering (GISE) camp. The girls came from more than 50 different schools to participate in hands-on learning opportunities in science and engineering. Focus areas included Human Genetics, Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, Lego Robotics and Computer Science. A favorite camper activity was the cardboard canoe race in the Lurie Fountain on north campus. One evening during camp, parents and families are invited to campus for a pizza dinner and to participate in an UM admissions information session. Click here for full story.

WISE Benefits from Two Grants
The WISE Program received funding for two important initiatives this past summer. The Pfizer Community Grants Program is continuing to support the Southeast Michigan Science Fair for the fourth year. In addition, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute is supporting The Trek Toward Active Learning: From High School to the University, a joint initiative between Daniel Klionsky in the Life Sciences Institute, Sandra Gregerman in the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, and Cinda Davis in the Women in Science and Engineering Program. Sally Ride Science Festival 2006!
The 2006 Sally Ride science festival was a great success, with more than 500 fifth- through eighth-grade girls attending. The festival (held this September on UM’s North Campus), featured a talk by former astronaut Kathy Sullivan. Sullivan became an astronaut in 1979 and served on three missions, in 1984, 1990, and 1992. Sullivan logged a total of 532 space hours and was part of the crew that launched the Hubble Space Telescope. Click here for full story. |

WISE Lunch with Assistant Professor of Physics Jennifer Ogilvie
Jennifer Ogilvie, Assistant Professor of Physics and Assistant Research Scientist, Biophysics Research Division, was the featured speaker at a WISE-sponsored informal lunch for graduate women in the STEM fields. Ogilvie described her path from her graduate program to her position at the University of Michigan. Students were interested in understanding the academic application process—from how to find job openings to the appropriate length of an application research proposal. Ogilvie shared tips from the applicant side, as well as tips from the perspective of her new role on the interviewing side. Click here for full story.

WISE-Sponsored Southeast Michigan Science Fair Produces Finalists
Three contestants from last year’s Southeast Michigan Science Fair (co-sponsored by WISE) have been chosen to compete in the Discovery Channel’s Young Scientist Challenge.
Ann Arbor Christian School’s Matthew Garber (“Daphnia on Drugs!”), Clague Middle School’s Spencer Robert Snow (“Correlation of Physical Traits with the 50-Yard Freestyle Times of 11-14 Year Old Male Swimmers”) and Forsythe Middle School’s Brenda J. Shih (“The Sound Frequency and Finger Positions of a Violin”) are among 400 other semifinalists in this year’s competition.
40 finalists, grades 5-8, will be chosen in October. Selected from fair participants in the States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, these finalists will be flown to Washington to participate in numerous scientific challenges. Top prize in the competition is a $20,000 scholarship and the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.”
WISE-Sponsored Career Fair Workshop for Undergraduate Women
Every Fall the University of Michigan offers two career fairs for students, one on central campus and one on north campus. In the spring, internship fairs are offered on each campus.
In an effort to help students undstand and prepare for the career and internships fairs, the WISE program worked with the UM central campus Career Center.
In addition to offering an overview of the fairs, students were given resume tips and resources, interviewing tips, suggestions on how to approach an employer's table at the fair, and the types of opportunities offered at each fair.
