Sundaes on Tuesdays kicks off the WISE academic year

WISE kicked-off this Fall season of support for undergraduate women interested in science and engineering by again hosting our annual Sundaes on Tuesday event. The event, held in a Chemistry Building lecture hall, includes a panel of upper-level undergraduate women in the sciences and engineering who give advice to and answer questions from the audience. The panel was followed by an ice-cream sundae event in the atrium of the Chemistry Building, as well as tours of the Science Learning Center.

This year’s panelists included Anjuli Jain Figueroa (Civil & Environmental Engineering), Lauren Fladger (Biomedical Engineering), Rachel Kraft (Mathematics and Education) and Subhratha Muthusamy (Brain, Behavior, and Cognitive Science Major).

Tips from the panelists to the freshman audience of more than 150 included:

  • Begin studying early for your exams and experiment with different study techniques. What worked for you in high school may not work for you at UM.

  • Find multiple support networks around campus, including peers and staff.

  • Make use of the study groups and resources, such as the Science Learning Center. It is unlikely you will succeed if you try to go it alone.

The event was co-sponsored by the WISE program, and the WISE Residence Program and the Science Learning Center.
