AWIS-WISE lunch discussion with evolution speaker Linda Partridge In March a dozen graduate and undergraduate women enjoyed a lunch discussion at Zanzibar, a downtown Ann Arbor restaurant, with Professor Linda Partridge, a Distinguished Lecturer in the Evolution Theme Semester series at UM. Partridge is a Professor of Biology at the University College London. Her research group has done ground-breaking work on the evolutionary genetics of senescence (aging). Partridge's campus talk focused on recent work on the biology of aging that has led to the surprising discovery that mutations in single genes can extend lifespan in laboratory animals. These findings both challenge some of the earlier conclusions of work on the evolution of aging and hold some promise for understanding human aging. In addition to learning more about Partridge’s research and path to success, students enjoyed meeting each other and discussing their own successes and challenges. This event was hosted by the Association for Women in Science and sponsored by Women in Science and Engineering.
