Southeast Michigan Science Fair directed again by WISE director Davis
WISE Director Cinda-Sue Davis again presided over the Southeast Michigan Science Fair, held March 8 and 9. As SEMSF Director, Dr. Davis was pleased to have over 80 high school projects and over 200 middle school projects in the fair this year. "Research has found that the experience of doing a hands-on science project is one of the most successful ways to get students interested in science. We hear this anecdotally from many students and faculty members who still remember their middle and high school science fair projects," says Davis.

"Backpack to Briefcase" with Libby Cheney from Shell Corporation
The College of Engineering and the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program hosted Elizabeth "Libby" Cheney for one of the "Backpack to Briefcase Professional Development Series" lunches on March 24. Libby Cheney is the Vice President of Corporate Support for Shell Exploration and Production in the Americas Region. Before coming to Shell, Ms Cheney had 24 years of industry experience with another major oil and gas company, including technical roles in reservoir engineering and management of domestic assets and international projects. Mrs. Cheney is Chairperson of the newly formed North America Carbon Capture and Sequestration Association.Click here for full story.

WISE co-hosts "Selecting a Math Science Concentration" event during LSA Concentration Fair week
More than 80 undergraduate students attended a "Selecting a Math or Science Concentration" event on March 27 at Pizza House restaurant, aimed and providing an opportunity to learn about different math and science concentrations from declared students.

Fourth Parenting In the Academy panel lunch held
Panelists for the fourth annual WISE-sponsored Parenting in the Academy lunch included Heather Carlson, Associate Professor of Medicinal Chemistry, College of Pharmacy,
Associate Professor of Chemistry; Marin Clark, Assistant Professor, Department of Geological Sciences; and Alec Gallimore, Professor of Aerospace Engineering, College of Engineering and Associate Dean for Academic Program and Initiatives, Rackham. WISE acquires SmartGirl.org
The WISE Program recently acquired the SmartGirl.org web site from UM's Institute for Research on Women in Gender (IRWG). The thirteen year-old site has been managed by IRWG since 2001. Due to organizational changes, IRWG was looking for a new home and a new direction for SmartGirl.org. Click

Congratulations and thank you to our Women in Science office advisory board members who will be graduating this month:
- Sara Worsham is graduating with a B.S. in Geology and will attend graduate school in Germany in the fall
- Rachel Kraft is graduating with her B. S. and secondary teaching certificate in mathematics and is currently interviewing for teaching positions
- Katie
Luker is graduating with a B.S. in Chemistry and will attend UC Berkely in the fall
- Kamali Sripath is graduating with a B.S. in Plant Biology and will attend graduate school a UM in the fall
- Sarah Kairis is graduating with a B.S. in Biology and is spending the summer as a project leader for a UM Global Intercultural Experience for Undergraduates (GIEU) program in the Philippines before applying to graduate schools in the fall
