December 2007

A message from Director Dr. Cinda-Sue Davis

The 2007/2008 academic year started once again with a significant move for the one of the Women in Science and Engineering Program offices.  The WISE Science moved from temporary space to its permanent location at 1140 Undergraduate Science Building (USB).  We were sad to leave our little space next to the Science Learning Center in the Chemistry Building but have grown to love the greatly expanded space and location of our new digs. We share an office suite with the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) and the Program in the Environment (PiTE) – both wonderful neighbors with terrific opportunities for collaborations.  Click here for full story.

Profile: Applied Physics Ph.D. candidate Nicole Campbell

Nicole Campbell's love of science began at the early age of seven, when she remembers being fascinated by radar. Years later she would find herself conducting research which would contribute to the development of a Multilayer Michigan Microwave Scattering Model in U-M's Radiation Laboratory. It's a long road from a child of seven to becoming a Ph.D. candidate, and along the way Campbell has always distinguished herself. Click here for full story.

Research and study abroad for science, math and engineering students

The WISE program co-sponsored a Research and Study Abroad workshop in November for undergraduate students in science, math and engineering. Nearly 100 students turned out for this workshop. Many graduate schools and employers view overseas experiences as an important part of an undergraduate education. However, many science, math and engineering students don't take advantage of study abroad experiences because of the perceptions or the reality of the difficulty of trying to fit this experience into a an academically rigorous course load. WISE Residence Program (RP): WISE Night Recap

This semester, the WISE RP has hosted several exciting WISE Nights. On September 11th, the annual Sundaes on Tuesday event offered students the opportunity to hear tips from returning students about how they can succeed in their transition to U of M. They also learned more about the many science- and engineering-related resources they can take advantage of throughout the year, such as the Science Learning Center (SLC).
