SWE Boeing Tech team
Twelve UM women, co-sponsored by WISE, will be participating in the Society of Women Engineer's Boeing Tech Team competition at this October's SWE National Conference. Teams are challenged to work with a corporate partner to develop an engineering solution, including a prototype, to a problem faced in industry.
The UM Tech Team is working with Aerospace Company out of Los Angeles, California, to find a solution to dust mitigation on the lunar surface, a problem that must be addressed before humans can return to the moon. Team members include Erin Bachynski, Shweta Bhat, Corinne Egatto, Elizabeth Flak, Amanda Heath, Rachel LaVoy, Heetal Patel, Patricia Savage, Heeral Sheth, Ambreen Tasawar, Kara Vargo, and Elizabeth Widen, who together represent seven different engineering disciplines.
The UM Tech Team will compete against teams from other universities. Team projects, composed of oral and written portions, will be reviewed by a panel of judges in several areas including teamwork, the use of the engineering process, and the final product.
Tech Team provides female engineering students with the opportunity to work with industry and to learn outside of the typical classroom environment and to work with their female colleagues on a current engineering problem.
The team's next step is to create a prototype of their solution, which will likely be a portable tool used to repel charged dust particles.
