WISE RP-A Semester in Review

The fall 2005 semester has proved to be a busy one for the women of WISE RP.

September marked the beginning of a wonderful semester.   The all-WISE RP STEPS team-building experience helped build a solid community right from the start.   WISE women then conducted Penny Wars to assist with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.   WISE Smoothie Night resulted in a line all the way to the Jo elevator.   The trip to Cedar Point was a success with twenty-one WISE women in attendance.   It was all topped off with three successful WISE Nights - Welcome to WISE, Sundaes on Tuesdays, and Vertical Ecosystems at the Michigan Arboretum - and two successful Activity Nights - Test Taking & Time Management and Reading Effectively for College.

Although October marked the beginning of midterms, WISE women still made time for fun.   Aside from the wallyball and broomball IM teams, several WISE women showcased their magnificent talents at the WISE Talent Show.   Then there was the Halloween Party and all of the wonderful costumes.   Congratulations again to Fifth Mo for winning the Halloween decoration contest!   The October WISE Nights sparked great discussion and proved to be quite successful - The Ethics of Stem Cell Research and Testing your Physical Intuition with Physics!

November was perhaps the busiest month thus far with three volunteer activities, including: Tech Day, Circle K 24 hours of service, and Salvation Army bell ringing.   WISE women also helped present information to both the Slauson and Hamtramck middle school girls to give them an idea of what college is like and how they could best prepare to go to college and major in science and engineering.    Also, let us not forget the culture bus trip and the wonderful presentation on alternative careers in public health.   We wrapped-up our WISE Nights this month with a bang - Science versus Culture: Disability Awareness; Life Sciences and Society: Bioethics; and Women's Health: Is College a Risk to Your Health?

December always brings out the best in WISE women.   To celebrate the holiday season, WISE women continued to participate in Salvation Army bell ringing and decorated holiday cards for others.   Also, the first 'Secret Sisters' week was initiated as a means to encourage WISE women during finals. Dance Dance Revolution Night gave WISE women a chance to strut their stuff and Euchre Night proved that the WISE women are not only brilliant, but are stellar card players as well!

Each and every WISE woman deserves a pat on the back for a semester well done!   Not only have they managed their academics, but they have been able to balance social and community activities, while maintaining near-perfect attendance at all eight required WISE Nights!
