K-12 Programming

Recognizing that an undergraduate support program cannot operate in a vacuum, but must build upon the pre-college experience. Women in Science and Engineering Program has developed an active outreach program to secondary schools. Our pre-college programs include the following:

Girls in Science and Engineering (GISE) - summer program - No longer accepting applications for 2009 GISE camp

Dates: June 22-26, 2009
Applications available February 1, 2009
Girls in Science and Engineering is a program that brings seventh- and eighth-grade students to campus for one week during the summer. The students participate in hands-on projects in engineering, the human genome project, chemistry, physics, and space science as well as sessions on computers, careers, and ethics in science. ENGAGE - ENGineering for HumAnity and ServinG SociEty - summer program

Dates: June 22-26, 2009
ENGAGE is an exciting non-residential one-week program for students who will complete the 10th or 11th grade by June 2009. Are you interested in learning how women engineers have contributed to the health and well-being of people? Have you wondered how engineers work to improve the environment? Are you interested in learning how engineers develop software to predict earthquakes? Would it be fun to create devices that improves wheelchair function or design a hospital gown that glows when a patient needs help?

During the program you’ll learn about women engineers and the contributions they make to society, the engineering process and engineering problem-solving. Each day will feature hands-on lessons during which you will apply what you have learned.

Several field trips are planned throughout the week; some are related directly to the camp, and some are just plain fun. Students will tour various research facilities and engage in discussions with experts who use engineering to solve real problems in medicine, transportation, the environment, entertainment, communications and more. This program is designed to encourage young women to consider careers in science and engineering. All students are welcome to apply.
